Balancing Autonomy and Accountability in the Classroom and Beyond

Teachers feel the pressure to have an impact on the behavior of their students. One of the real challenges lies in balancing autonomy and accountability.  Autonomy, or freedom of choice and voice, is a basic psychological need and a key to developing internal motivation. But autonomy is often misunderstood as simply freedom.  If we offer only freedom, we are inviting chaos into our schools. Autonomy is about freedom with guardrails – the accountability that makes autonomy feel motivating. In this one-day workshop, you will learn how to incorporate a healthy balance of autonomy and accountability. You will notice those you lead moving forward and your relationships improving at the same time.

Participants will:

  • Understand the different types of autonomy.
  • Learn how autonomy fuels internal motivation for academics and character.
  • Learn developmentally appropriate practices that support autonomy.
  • Leave with action steps and an accountability partner.
